Southern Through and Through

Southern Through and Through

By theredsb

When it comes to dining, Myrtle Beach is best known for its seafood and for good reason. The Atlantic Ocean happens to be in close proximity throughout the area, so it is easy to see why seafood often dominates the culinary scene in Myrtle Beach. Sometimes overlooked in this part of the Grand Strand is the local tradition for true Southern Cooking. This involves country cooking, lowcountry dishes and soul food, to name just a few. While there are many places where you can find a whole meal at an affordable price, here are the best places to eat this kind of food in Myrtle Beach:

Prosser’s BBQ

Located in Murrells Inlet, this barbecue joint also offers a country cooking buffet that will make your mouth water. Since relocating from the neighboring town of Hemingway, the Prosser family has been satisfying the cravings of hungry residents and visitors. The buffet consists of the famous barbeque recipe, as well as other southern choices such as Brunswick stew and chicken bog. The menu also features southern staples such as fried chicken, veggies and country ham. The restaurant also serves sweet banana pudding.

Mammy’s Kitchen

This country-cooking institution in the Grand Strand has been offering hot meals in downtown Myrtle Beach since 1963. Mammy’s Kitchen serves some of the best meals in Myrtle Beach. Their Southern style buffet breakfast is highly popular and includes scrambled eggs, French toast, sausage, bacon, pancakes, grits and fresh fruits. The lunch menu features traditional-country food, along with hamburgers and fries for those in your group who are not fond of the southern cuisine. This family-owned eatery has been serving travelers for many years now.

Big Mike’s

This joint serves some of the best soul food along the Grand Strand. Owner “Big Mike” and chef Queenie Bowens serve a variety of comfort foods, featuring specials where anyone can get a meat and veggies for an affordable price. Vacationers can also opt for Southern staples such as pork chops and fried chicken, country style steak and meatloaf, as well as mashed potatoes, collard greens and cheese, to make up a solid dish.

Simply Southern Smokehouse

BBQ is the main serving at Simply Southern Smokehouse, but the country-style buffet is packed with amazing country cooking for anyone in your party who is looking for comfort food. The menu includes barbecue chicken and pulled pork. Simply Southern blends the perfect staples, including chicken, chicken bog and dumplings, collard greens and sweet potatoes. Peach cobbler a la mode, cornbread and fresh biscuits are also available to go with it, if you have room.

Hoskins Restaurant

Opened in 1948, Hoskins Restaurant is the place to go on Main Street in North Myrtle Beach, opposite the Thomas Beach Vacations. This place has been a local’s favourite for several decades. Hoskins Restaurant serves Southern favorites such as barbecued ribs and fried chicken, along with oysters and shrimp that you would expect in this part of the Grand Strand. Get there early or line up for their famous homemade lunch specials. This restaurant gives you something that many places never do: a sense that virtually everything is cooked to perfection.
